When one of your teeth is chipped or suffers from a cavity it can cause significant discomfort. If it’s detected early, our dentists, Dr. Shelly Galvin or Dr. Kritika Thomas may be able to treat the compromised tooth by applying a dental filling at their dental office in Kansas City, Kansas.

This treatment involves removing some of the tooth enamel to create a clean surface to bond the dental filling. The specific material our dentists use for the dental filling will be based on its location in your mouth and how visible it is in your smile.

Amalgam dental fillings are durable and can be used to repair cavities on back teeth. Since they are dark in color it makes amalgam a poor choice to repair a chip or cavity that afflicts a tooth in your smile.

Composite fillings are made from a special dental-grade resin that can be shaded to color match the surrounding tooth enamel. This makes them a good choice for repairing a visible tooth.

Both of these filling materials can be applied in a single appointment. They will be bonded and hardened by a special ultraviolet light.

Porcelain fillings are also a good choice for teeth that appear in your smile. The porcelain material can be shaded to match the color of the surrounding tooth enamel.

Gold fillings are very durable and can often be called for to repair cavities on back teeth that are responsible for chewing and grinding tough foods.

Both gold and porcelain dental filling need to be created in a dental lab by professional dental technicians. This will require a second appointment to cement them into the void left by the extracted tooth decay.
